In addition to this, our team set up a photo exhibition demonstrating the tragic condition of the river. Our graffiti boards generated much enthusiasm and enabled participants to voice their opinion on the river while drawings made by street children portraying the pathetic state of the river provided a meaningful insight on the issue. The ‘We For Yamuna’ volunteers worked in tandem with the Salaam Baalak Trust children not only to clean a part of the bank but also to plant a number of saplings along the ghat. This shramdaan was successful in removing 750 tonnes of garbage from along the riverbank. Nevertheless, despite the many accomplishments of the shramdaan, what is needed is a long term planned and sustained effort to revive this precious water source. The ‘We For Yamuna’ team is committed to bringing about a healthier environment and for this we require the wholehearted support of all citizens.
¨ WFY has been actively performing street plays in the university and at Dilli Haat in order to focus attention on the dying river. ¨ We put up wall magazines in important centres of the city (Khan market and Dilli Haat) that put forward our cause and raise awareness about environmental issues as well as provide information about the basic things a citizen can practice in order to make a change for the better. In addition to this, we are also trying to get permanent spots in other markets where a proper board could be set up. |
