Conserve at home
Most of us would like to live in pleasant surroundings. If we put so much stress on a clean home, then why not a clean environment. Each of us can help everyone live cleaner and greener. It just takes a little more thought and care in our homes and our backyards. What we can do . Plant more trees in the neighbourhood. Neem, champa, kanak provide excellent shade. If youre fond of flowers harshringar, gulmohar, semal, roherha offer colourful options and help prevent soil erosion. More essential, they provide much needed oxygen. Avoid the use of plastic. Use cloth or jute bags when you go shopping. Plastics used in radios, TV sets, cars, blood transfusions, pipes have a long lifespan. With technological advances, these plastics can be remoulded into new items which can last for decades. Soft drink glasses, bread packaging, packets of noodles, toffees and chocolates are very polluting but can be recycled. The most polluting are the thin coloured polybags that are found at vegetable shops fruit shops and stores. Most of these find their way into open sewers and garbage dumps often choking cows and other animals.Try separating your waste into biodegradable and non-biodegradable material.
Conserve water. Fix leaky taps and turn off the tap when you wash, brush or shave. Make your own vermi compost pit. Kitchen waste such as peels, egg shells. Coffee dregs, tea leaves, rotten vegetables and fruits along with garden waste such as fallen leaves, dead leaves, dry weeds can be composted. Try not to waste paper. Old calendars can make attractive covers for notebooks. Invert envelopes to use them again. Make full use of your friendly neighbourhood kabadiwala
